Zinc-Based Chemistry

Zēlos has invented and patented a new technology that stabilizes zinc-based batteries, enabling them to run for hundreds, even thousands of cycles and even operate at very high rates.

Zinc is an excellent electrode for alkaline batteries and is used extensively for primary cells (MnZn, Zn-air) and rechargeable cells (NiZn, AgZn). It has high specific capacity (818 mAh/g), high density (7.1 g/cm3), and provides high voltage capabilities in aqueous electrolytes. Alkaline batteries with Zinc electrodes are known for long calendar life: leading manufacturers can warrant 12 years storage life for batteries with Zn electrodes.

Zinc is also abundant, economical, non-toxic, and inherently safe inside a battery. With Zēlos technology, zinc batteries can perform competitively for demanding stationary storage applications, without the growing operational, transportation, and sourcing risks present in Li-ion systems.
